Community Leader to Co-Deputy Director at Unite Oregon

The Trajectory from Community Leader to Co-Deputy Director

We sat down with Nuhamin Eiden (she/they), Co-Deputy Director at Unite Oregon, to learn more about her career trajectory within the organization, reflecting on the contributions of women and femmes on staff, and navigating a leadership role as a queer woman of color at Unite.

Nuhamin Eiden was born and raised in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to a large family. She emigrated to the United States at the turn of the century and has called Portland home for the past 16 years. Nuhamin has spent this time weaving a community intent on building systems rooted in justice and has made lifelong kinships that continue to deepen and expand. Nuhamin has a background in equitable economic development, housing justice, and organizational leadership. Their training background is in Anthropology, History, and Public Administration.

On a personal level, Nuhamin is currently in their 30’s, thriving, celebrating 12 years of marriage, and spending time with their child. Nuhamin spends her free time communing with nature, writing, reading, listening to music, traveling, and cultivating community with family and friends.

Nuhamin began their career at Unite Oregon by enrolling in the Pan-Immigrant Leadership and Organizing Training program (PILOT) as a community member. The PILOT program is designed to address the challenges emerging immigrant and refugee leaders and groups face through leadership and skill-building convenings. After graduating from the PILOT program, Nuhamin continued their involvement and served on the Multnomah County Leadership Council. As Unite grew to a statewide organization, Nuahmin acted on the board before joining the team as the Southwest Corridor Equity Coalition Manager. Read more about the project here!

In 2021, Nuhamin was promoted to Multnomah County Chapter Director and began building a thriving community development team. Nuhamin is now the Co-Deputy Director and is part of the leadership team. View the interview video clips on conversations about gender justice, reproductive rights, intersectionality, policy, and more!
