Celebrating the Success of the Washington County Equitable Housing Coalition Leadership Program

We are thrilled to celebrate the successful completion of the Washington County Equitable Housing Coalition Leadership Program by this year's cohort. From January to May 2023, immigrants, refugees, Black, Indigenous, and People of Color community members from Hillsboro, Tualatin, and Tigard came together to learn about housing issues, explore avenues for involvement in housing initiatives, and empower themselves as leaders in Washington County.

The Cohort Program served as a platform to educate participants on various housing topics, including:

  • application processes,

  • screening criteria,

  • tenant rights,

  • community development,

  • civic engagement;

  • and learning about future housing projects.

The program also focused on expanding organizing and leadership skills, nurturing the growth of housing justice leaders, and providing opportunities for cohort members to participate in decision-making processes. By encouraging active involvement in shaping housing policies and initiatives, the program aimed to empower participants to play an instrumental role in creating a housing landscape that is fair, accessible, and inclusive for all residents.

Reflecting on her experience in the leadership program, Melinda from the Class of 2023 shares her thoughts: "This was great. I learned a lot, and I feel like I am ready now to go and speak. Before, I used to be shy and scared, but coming to this [leadership program] gave me confidence. I can do it, yes!" Melinda's inspiring journey exemplifies the program's transformative impact, empowering individuals to find their voices and take on leadership roles in advocating for equitable housing.

At Unite, we aim to create inclusive programs and ensure language access for all our members. The leadership cohort was conducted in English and Spanish to ensure participants fully understood the tools and resources provided. Piyawee, Muwafaq, Jazmin, and Juan, the Community Organizers from the Washington County Chapter, worked diligently to establish an inclusive program. We extend our heartfelt appreciation to the dedicated interpreters and translators who were present in all the meetings.

Daria, class of 2023 shares her experience and resident in Washington County:

“My experience with the Affordable Housing Equity Coalition was great! I recommend anyone from or working with marginalized communities sign up for the next cohort. I appreciate all the coordination that went into getting me connected to housing and advocacy resources in Washington County. Thank you to all the wonderful staff and presenters”.

Meet Zhulma! Originally from Ecuador, she has successfully completed her third leadership program at Unite Oregon and is on track to becoming a prominent community leader in Washinton County. With an unwavering commitment to social justice, Zhulma has strongly advocated for affordable housing, community-based development, safe highways along the TV highway, and equitable education for youth.

I decided to join this program because I never understood the term affordable housing and was interested in gaining knowledge and the tools to help my family and community. I want to teach my kids that it’s important to be involved and volunteer our time for others when possible.

As a dedicated mom, Zhulma understands the importance of creating a thriving and inclusive Washington County for everyone. With her passion and drive, she is actively working to be a part of the solution, making a lasting impact on her community.

Equitable housing is an essential component of building thriving communities. When individuals and families have access to safe, affordable, and stable housing, they can more effectively pursue educational and employment opportunities, support their families, and contribute to the community's overall well-being. By fostering an inclusive housing environment, we can address systemic disparities, combat homelessness, and ensure everyone has a place to call home.

As we celebrate their accomplishments, we thank our partners Community Housing Fund, Homeplate Youth Services, and Meyer Memorial Trust Fund, for creating meaningful opportunities for the Black, Indigenous, People of Color, immigrants and refugees, rural communities, and people experiencing poverty in Washington County. Together, we can create a county that thrives on justice, fairness, and compassion for all its residents.
