Over the weekend a family of four were attacked by gunfire while in their car in SE Portland. The mother, a refugee from Sudan, was killed at the scene while the father, a refugee from Somalia, was critically injured and remains in the hospital. Their 1 year old and 5 year old, who were in the car, were also injured by the gunfire. Unite Oregon joins the immigrant and refugee community in grieving after this horrific act of violence. We stand in solidarity with the family knowing that the heartache from this tragedy will endure for many years to come.

The family was a member of the Center for African Immigrants and Refugee Organization and their 5 year old son attended their preschool program. Abdikadir Mohamud, CAIRO’s Founding Executive Director, described their student as “kind, respectful, and is one of the sweetest kids in our program. When he comes into the classroom, he may be quiet at first but his smile brightens up our room,” and also said about his mother, “she was sweet just like her son, cared so much about his education, and was always understanding. She was a lovable person and amazing mother.” Now, the family needs our help. CAIRO is raising funds to cover meals for the family, funeral expenses for the mother, medical bills, and future educational expenses for the children. Donate here.
