Climate Resilience Coordinator (Statewide)

Position Title: Community Organizer

Duration: Full Time, Ongoing

Compensation: $55,000 - $60,000 per year depending on experience; generous and progressive benefits including medical and dental care 100% of premiums paid by Unite Oregon, paid wellness leave, vacation, flex time, and personal days off; technology reimbursement; 4 hours personal time off/week, $300 annual FSA contribution, 2.5% 401K contribution after 6 months

About Unite Oregon: Unite Oregon is a 501c3 grassroots community organization with four chapters, in Multnomah County, Washington County, Clackamas County, and Rogue Valley. We believe that all people can become leaders and agents of change in the areas of racial justice, immigrant and refugee rights, affordable housing, climate justice, and economic prosperity. Unite Oregon is building a unified intercultural movement for justice in our state.

Position Description: Unite Oregon is seeking an experienced, culturally responsive Climate Resilience Coordinator to help immigrants, refugees, and Black, Indigenous, POC build power statewide focus. The main focus of this position will be to grow environmental justice and community resilience awareness and expertise in our communities as well as organize with these communities; lead local community organizing, engagement, and leadership development efforts; build community capacity to engage with local government on issues that will impact the community for generations to come; and convene, train and empower diverse community members to voice their viewpoints, opinions and concerns in regards to decision making around various social justice issues.This position will report to the Climate Resilience & Environmental Justice Manager.

Position Responsibilities

Responsibilities, in collaboration with organizing staff, are as follows:

Coordinate

  • Community engagement towards the development of community resource hubs and strengthened resilience networks across Oregon.

  • Coordinate and implement project deliverables related to climate resilience, building resilience, and enhancing community networks strengthening adaptation to climate change.

  • Connect communities to important resources and incentives related to earthquakes, extreme weather, flooding, and wildfires. 

  • Coordinate with other frontline, BIPOC, and community based organizations and coalitions on disaster resilience initiatives across the state of Oregon. 

  • Document and track deliverables and support the Climate Manager in developing reports.  

  • Advance efforts towards a just transition to a clean energy economy, environmental Justice and access to affordable, healthy and resilient housing.

Community Organizing 

  • Recruit, coordinate, and organize members across the state of Oregon.

  • Increase the number of community members in our chapters trained in climate and environmental justice and clean energy issues and receiving leadership development training. 

  • Recruit volunteers and facilitate regular volunteer and leadership development opportunities (ie, community forums, door knocking, skill building workshops, testimony/advocacy opportunities, volunteer training, etc).

  • Keep UO members informed about important climate, environmental justice, and resilience related opportunities for action.

  • Hosting and representing UO and climate and environmental justice pillar at events in  Oregon and other chapter areas.

  • Support with facilitating and or note-taking of statewide or Central Oregon environmental justice leadership committees.

  • Maintain regular communication with volunteers via email, phone calls, and occasional one on one check ins.

  • Increase climate crisis-related disaster and pandemic resilience in communities

  • Support UO 6 Pillar work and other chapter actions related to climate and environmental justice.

  • Participate in coalitions that align with strategic plan, and organizational mission and vision.

General

  • Participate in the climate leadership committee meetings, coalitions, and report on work progress.

  • Participate in Unite Oregon staff meetings and retreats.

  • Participate in training and professional development opportunities relevant to the role.

  • Assist in internal and external communication support for the project via social media, email, phone, newsletters, earned media, etc.

  • Demonstrate accuracy, attention to detail, maintenance of confidentiality, and the ability to meet deadlines and appropriately interact with sensitive information.

Required Qualifications

  • Experience working on climate and/or environmental justice issues and policies 

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Excellent organizational and record-keeping skills.

  • Highly organized and able to effectively support multiple projects simultaneously.

  • Trauma-informed and culturally specific approach to direct service delivery.

  • Proficient with technology including Google Workspace, word processing, PowerPoint, spreadsheets, social media, Zoom, and Google Meets.

  • Anti-oppression, anti-racism, diversity, equity, and inclusion work experience.

Preferred Skills and Experience

  • At least 2 years of experience in grassroots community organizing, campaigns, or direct service work.

  • At least 1 year of experience working on climate and environmental justice issues and policies.

  • Ability to work remotely and to travel to meetings and events across the state of Oregon.

  • Bilingual and bicultural in one of the following languages: Spanish, Arabic, Vietnamese, and/or Somali.
